The Rockwell Museum is seeking an experienced mural artist to work with Rockwell staff and High School Learning Center (HSLC) students to plan, design and paint a mural in downtown Corning, NY as part of the Museum’s ongoing Alley Art Project.
Proposal deadline extension: May 3, 2022
The ideal candidate will have teaching experience, with a strong preference for direct experience working with teens. The selected artist will co-teach with Rockwell educators and take a leadership role in developing a cohesive design concept that represents the student artwork while honoring the artist’s creative vision. The development of the mural design is a collaborative and creative process that uses the Museum’s collection as inspiration and is connected to The Rockwell’s annual theme. The 2023 annual theme will be focused on heroes.
Starting in 2023, the accepted artist will attend weekly mural design classes in March, create a draft mock-up design to share with students for feedback in April, produce a final mural design that will be submitted to appropriate agencies for approval in May, paint the mural on site in August with HSLC students and staff, and attend a community ribbon-cutting ceremony. This is a nine-month commitment, although the guest artist will only be required to be on-site for 6–10 days in August 2023.
