A Ribbon Cutting Event for a New Mural in Corning

CORNING, NY – A hidden spot in Corning’s Denison Park has been given a facelift.  The tunnel underpass that connects the North and South sides of Denison Park now features Perfect Imperfection, the latest Alley Art Project mural created by students of Corning-Painted Post Area School District High School Learning Center.  Parks and Recreation at City of Corning and The Rockwell Museum will host a ribbon-cutting event on Thursday December 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mural site.  The public is invited to attend.

For the creation of Perfect Imperfection, students studied pieces in the special exhibition On Fire: The Nancy and Alan Cameros Collection of Southwestern Pottery. Symbolism from Southwestern American Indian cultures was studied and students connected the symbolism to aspects of their own lives. The design was created during classes held at The Rockwell in the spring of this year and executed by students August –October of this year. Perfect Imperfection is the sixth mural created under the Alley Art Project under the direction of The Rockwell Museum Education Department.  Bradford Leiby, graduate of the High School Learning Center, served as artist-in-residence for the project.

“We were delighted that Chuck King, Director of Parks and Recreation at City of Corning, reached out to The Rockwell regarding the Alley Art Mural Project.  He asked for a mural to be painted in Denison Park furthering the connection between the students and the community by expanding the locations and venues of the project,” says Gigi Alvare, Director of Education at The Rockwell Museum.

The Project is made possible in part by grants from The Triangle Fund and Great Circle Foundation, Inc. A special thank you is extended to The Crystal City Parks Foundation, Inc. for their contribution of wall preparation.
