Devan Shimoyama is a visual artist who works primarily in painting and self-portraiture, with works inspired by classical mythology, divination, fantasy, and science fiction. Through his depictions of the queer Black male form, Shimoyama navigates his own personal narratives amid larger cultural and political forces. In this lecture, he will unpack his process through recent work on themes of tarot, Black barbershops, and spontaneous memorials.
