Participating students developed their artistic skills, researched art history, and experimented with diverse media and art-making techniques to create a cohesive body of work.
During the school year, students visited The Rockwell and other regional museums to study and draw inspiration for their own works of art. The thought-provoking college-level course encourages students to experiment with media outside of their comfort zones and challenge their own cultural expectations and creative boundaries. Many of the final pieces are influenced by objects in The Rockwell’s collection. Do you notice any collection connections?
Students in the course developed analytical skills in problem solving and divergent thinking while working towards technical proficiency and gaining confidence as artmakers. They learned about art professions and careers in the museum field as they prepare for higher education. The Rockwell is proud to present this exploration of art as an integral part of everyday life, permeating all levels of human creativity, expression, communication, and understanding.
Behind the Scenes
Corning-Painted Post High School students each curated and installed their own art showcase as part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Visual Arts Programme. They engaged in critical reflection of their art and the art of their peers to broaden their perspectives and understanding of theoretical, artmaking, and curatorial practices.
Behind the scenes, students painted pedestals, wrote labels, matted and framed art, built display structures, and worked collaboratively to hang their art. Students were prompted to consider the theme and story they wanted to communicate through their work. They learned about museum exhibition design by making choices with consideration for the visitor experience.
Research and documentation are core to the IB Visual Arts curriculum. Students kept detailed journals of their ideas, sources of inspiration, sketches, and project development. They also photographed their project process and individual final showcases presented here.
