Students visited The Rockwell in January to explore how colors can communicate and symbolize an important message, idea, or emotion in a work of art. Students were also prompted to think about color in relation to history, geography, and the traditions of different groups of people. They considered how artists use a variety of colors and media to express aspects of their culture and identity. Students worked to decode symbols and make inferences about what they saw to develop critical thinking skills and gain a deeper understanding of the art on view.
In their choice-based art class, students experimented with color, media, techniques, and artistic processes to create their own art that incorporates symbolism. The students’ work expresses ideas that represent their personal identities and experiences. The choice-based art curriculum at ASMS allows students to pursue their artistic style and use materials they are curious about, catering to their individual interests and needs. On view in this exhibition are the students’ one-of-a-kind colorful creations.
