Our Spotlight Exhibition features Devan Shimoyama’s installation, Untitled (for Tamir), a bejeweled, flower-laden swing set surrounded by glittering teardrops in remembrance of the murder of Tamir Rice.

Join us for a gallery talk led by Andrew W. Mellon Fellow and PhD Student Dakota Stevens, who is pursuing a PhD in Art History with a focus on public art. Stevens will lead a conversation with Rockwell staff and attendees about the visual language of memorials, how the context of a museum, gallery, or public space changes how we see a memorial, and what we take away from informal memorials created in the wake of the tragedies that have shaped the past decade.

This exhibition and programming is supported by the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, Inc.

Photograph of a swing set with three swings, different color flower arrangements on each swing seat. The swing set seats do not invite play, but are frozen in time as a memorial, laden with the faux flowers that we might leave at the site of loss or tragedy.
