Join us as we celebrate the opening of a new student exhibition for the Alley Art Project with Teaching Mural Artist Alice Mizrachi. This student reception will unveil the 2024 mural design and celebrate the collaboration between The Rockwell Museum, the High School Learning Center (HSLC) of the Corning-Painted Post Area School District and SUNY Corning Community College (CCC). This event is free and open to family and friends of HSLC students. Refreshments will be served.

Inspired by artist Romare Bearden in The Rockwell’s Collection and the Museum’s 2024 annual theme, Creating Connections, this year’s mural project illustrates the layers of personal and social connections between students and their peers, friends and families, as well as the HSLC and community environments. How do these connections reveal aspects of their identities? What aspects of their identities shine through these connections?

Students examined how art can provide a powerful lens to convey a message or an idea, voice important issues and enlighten people to see beyond a singular perspective. With numerous lifetime achievements, Bearden focused on using the arts to engage people in conversation and improve the public understanding of issues faced by the African American community. Students considered how art in public spaces can impact people in their day-to-day lives and how their youth voices can be amplified through an artistic, expressive mural project in Corning, NY.

Students created mixed-media self-portrait collages inspired by Bearden’s, The Conversation and Mother and Child works of art on view at The Rockwell. They experimented with layering paint, magazine cut-outs, found objects and other materials to incorporate symbolism. Students also transferred a photograph of themselves into the composition of their pieces to create a visual narrative that represents their unique identities connected to their community at large. Elements from the individual student works are incorporated into the mural design.

This student exhibition will be on view May 15 – September 2, 2024
